Future proof traveling

Traveling offers wonderful opportunities to explore new places and cultures, but it can also affect the environment. Fortunately, staying at Hektor helps you reduce your environmental footprint while still enjoying your our little wonders to the fullest.

Tap into our small efforts

At Hektor, water is our number one priority. Did you know that 11 out of 12 months are considered ‘dry’ by meteorological standards? Every drop counts, so we recycle all the water used inside the house. Our homemade organic soaps and Yokuu cleaning products ensure that there is no doubt: the water can be used for the vegetables, (fruit) trees & bushes and garden plants. It’s not a biggie for us as our guests seem to like our soaps.

And while you’re soaping up, you can listen to our 3’ shower song list. The perfect sing-a-long with the ideal length to save some water.

Next fall, we will look into dew catchers that can provide for even more water for the farm!

Lanzarote might be dry, we have about 3.000 hours of sunshine. No wonder we choose for solar energy for the guesthouse, to heat the small pool*, and for all hot water.

Hybrid & electrical cars can charge at Hektor, so why not rent one of those? Or go hiking. We have ideas galore!

*We’ve chosen a dipping pool to limit the water use.

Bright future

An appetite for a sustainable day

With plant-based food from our own farmlands, or wherever possible locally sourced, you (and we) are set for a energetic start of the day.
And if you want, you are welcome to roam our picking garden for more healthy treats.

A forest is slightly exaggerated, but with over 300 trees and bushes, we are regenerating the farm at quite a high speed. You have the opportunity to compensate (part of) your travel when booking directly with us.

And maybe, some years later, come and taste from what you’ve planted, next to experiencing food straight from our permaculture vegetable patches.

Come forest, come

From stray cats to jumpy sheep: our herd of rescue animals has grown a lot quicker than we expected. You will enjoy being greeted by Carmen in the morning, or be surprised by how cuddly our majorero* donkey Silvestre can be.

The sole purpose of adopting the animals was to give them a happy ever after, but most of them give us great gains while doing some (from fertilizer to welcome shouts).

*The majoreros, unfortunately, are close to extinction. Silvestre is one of the last ones living on the island, and across the Canaries no more than 200 hundred are around.

A cuddle first

Count on us

We know more than a place or two to send you to. Since visiting and living on the island, we have met so many inspiring people and seen numerous projects that are future proof. We will be happy to share our tips when you’re around.
