Artist and activists in residence

Artists as changemakers

Changemaking as an art form

Hektor is a safe space for artists, activists, guests and friends. We want to use our estate to create a better and more creative world, from one of the world’s most inspiring islands: Lanzarote.

Read more about our residencies below or register immediately.

Applications for 2025 are now open. For 2024, only Artist Stays are still available.

For who?

We offer working space both for artists and activists.

Our focus lies on artists and activists close to our land and values, with no limitations on forms or expressions.

For artists and activists who are passionate about making change and fostering a more beautiful world filled with countless little wonders we offer a discount.

What can you expect

You will stay in one of our suites and can work indoors in a taller space or outdoors. Our suites are 30-40 square meters in size, with a small kitchen, one or two rooms, a private bathroom, and a double bed. We provide bed sheets, towels, toiletries, and clean the room every two weeks.

There is also a shared work area (around 16 square meters) for artists/activists, which includes an additional kitchen.

Our rates:

  • € 1.250 for a stay of one month (one artist/activist). See discounts further on for Changemakers.

  • € 1.650 for a stay of one month (two artists/activists in one suite). See discounts further on for Changemakers.

  • € 22 per night for an extra guest (max. 2 people per suite). Please note we suggest to limit the stay of extra guests to max. 50% of your total stay.

These rates are for calendar months. We ask artists to plan their residency between the 1st and last day of the calendar month. No discounts will be given for residencies shorter than a calendar month. Of course, you can also come for two or more months.

Artistic work as a contribution is possible (see expectations).

All prices are excluding applicable taxes.

We are around to support you or for feedback, and can coach you if needed. However, being able to work and organise independently is necessary.

Facilities & food

Our suites are situated in the main house of Hektor and have one or two rooms, a dining area, kitchenette and en-suite bathroom. There is WiFi. They were recently renovated and are decorated with our arts, design & crafts collection.

Hektor also offers a shared garden with pool, relaxing spots and plenty of opportunities to work in the open air. There is also a picking garden (free to harvest whatever is ripe) and 12.000m2 of farmlands.

The atelier is reserved for our artists and has an extra kitchen. Some specialized materials (e.g. frames, easle, some paints and tools) are provided, while others are not (like a baking oven, recording material, …). We are happy to help you find materials or places on the island if needed.

Hektor has exhibition and presenting / performance possibilities. A contribution to the collection is mandatory in this case.

A physical and online library will be at your disposal prior, during and after your stay, containing literature on our values, the island on by our artists.

We offer a weekly meal for our artists (at least one per stay) and can provide breakfast and have an honesty bar.

Transport is not included. We had residents who came with a bikepacking car, who hiked and who rented a car. Public transport is limited to working days.

An invitation to share your vision

You're invited to share your thoughts on art, activism, and making a difference.

We think that engaging with others helps grow a passion for art and what you make. It's vital to us that artists, guests, and we can connect.

While the suites are private, the studio and the farm areas are for mingling, chatting, and making connections. We're also keen to introduce you to individuals, groups, or organizations on the island who could be beneficial for your projects. We'll assess your requirements more closely after your selection.

Expectations

Openness is a key value to participating in an AIR at Hektor. We want all our guests to feel comfortable around the place and each other, and interact when appropriate.

We do not expect any work donations*, but ask the following:

  • Acknowledgment for work produced during or as a result of the residency on the artists / activists website (including link), social media (including clearly visible tag), print media (including link to website).

  • All pictures taken of the property should mention Hektor (link on website, tags on social media). Print is not allowed unless there is a written confirmation (only e-mail) of us.

  • We will create a webpage of you as an artist - prior to your arrival and update this after your stay. We kindly ask you to provide us with qualitative material.

  • We will invite you to work on the land one day per week, to experience farm life first handedly. This is an invitation, it’s not mandatory.

Artists under 30 who focus on photography, painting, or graphic art can get a €400 discount when contributing to the collection. To be discussed during the selection process.

Showcasing (and selling) your work is possible during your stay. We are happy to promote and support any kind of showcasing. (*) A contribution to the collection will be asked in this case.

We expect every artist to respect any safety measurements that are necessary to create their work. Breaching this will be a ground for immediate removal.

Leave your daily work at home. Enjoy the routine of the farm and reduce your screen & meetings time as much as possible.

We want Hektor to be a diverse place, where everyone feels safe. Toxic behavior, racism, bigotry, … are a reason for removal.

As we are a plant-based guest house, we kindly ask you to try it out as much as possible while you are here and to only eat vegetarian (no meat or fish). We can introduce you to meal-prepping services if needed.

Smoking is not allowed in the entire house and studio and only on a designated area. We advice you to limit alcohol and drug use.

Extra guests are only allowed after approval.

Our values

We are a planet-driven guest house: we strongly believe we have to reduce our impact, definitely on an island like Lanzarote. That’s why we serve plant-based food (primarily from our garden), try to limit our use of energy and re-use our water.

We want Hektor to be as diverse as the ground and the house allows us too.

We want to make a change with this project, and show we take steps towards a better world. That can be any kind of step, no matter how small.

We believe in an open and direct communication.

Selection procedure

Our selection procedure starts with a simple registration. We ask for 15 working days to evaluate your application. We will only contact artists and activists eligible for a residency.

Please note that applications that focus on (art as) change-making that respect our values will be prioritised. Be sure to describe this clearly in your project description. We offer a € 250 discount per suite if your project embodies this. We will let you know immediately after selection.

A video call will be planned if your application is accepted, to get to know each other and to touch ground upon mutual expectations.

If we all feel like continuing with the residency, a letter of agreement will be send to you. If you decide to withdraw from the application process after this, a €25 invoice will be sent to secure administrative costs, no matter what the reason is.

Your residency will be secured after you have a send us a signed copy and paid a 50% deposit (with a maximum of € 600 per suite).

This is a rolling call and submissions will be handled based on entry date. We have not set a deadline, but will select artists on a regular basis.

After the residency

Every artist gets an updated webpage after the residency, including a description of the artist about his residency. When work is created or finished, it will be added to this webpage. Hektor gets the permission to share the work that has been created (or has been created as a result of the residency) on its online media. We will always mention, tag and link to the artist. Publications on external media will always be discussed with the artist.

From every artist, Yves will create a portrait during their stay. This picture will be used on our media. The artist can use the picture on their online media as well. However, it does not give the artist permission to publish the portrait in print media or not owned media.
