STACY BRAFIELD (UK/NO): writing

Kjøkkenhage

Stacy Brafield (she/her) is an artist (b.1987) in Suffolk, raised in the Lakes District, UK and is based in Bergen, Norway. A graduate from MA Fine Arts at Bergen Academy of Art in 2014. Within her practice Brafield is exploring human relations and forms of everyday interaction in society, reflecting these back to society in a poetic way. Exploring the realities that often go unnoticed in public space, my work provides a space for the overlooked to be seen. Works respond to the environment and are formed in community projects, performance, sound and text. Encouraging the audience through participation to reflect upon society, the interactions and processes through which the individual and the whole are shaping and being shaped.

Brafield is the co-founder of aerial, an artist-run space in Bergen. She has recently exhibited and hosted projects at Momemtum12 (Moss), Vestlandsutstillingen, TASC Studio Kitchen at Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen Assembly, USF, TagTeam (Bergen), The Royal Standard (Liverpool) and Vulpes Vulpes (London). She is a board member of UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund/Young Artists Society) and a member of The National Jury for Høstutstilling.

During her stay at Hektor, Stacy Brafield will be working on a new artist book: ‘show up’ that documents Kjøkkenhage (The Kitchen Garden). Kjøkkenhage is a living sculpture that was created collectively with the women living inside of Bergen Prison between 2021-2023, consisting of an allotment, a herb garden and a greenhouse. ‘show up’ will document the collective process, the engagement methodologies and include all of the recipes they shared and cooked along the way. Alongside the focused writing time, stacy is curious about the farm at Hektor! She is looking forward to soaking up new hands-on knowledge and exchanging stories from growing your own food.
